By Tracey Cox for MailOnline. Parents are often given all the credit — and the blame — for how their children turn out. You get accepted into university, your parents are congratulated on producing such a smart child. As adults, plenty of us blame our parents for any or all of our shortcomings. But how much is their fault — and what can you do to change it? Tracey Cox reveals that troubles in your relationships really could be down to your parents. According to a new study, our childhood affects our relationships for the whole of our lives — in quite a profound way. Researchers at Harvard University analysed a group of men in and followed up with the same men over the years that followed until the men were into their 80s. They found no matter what the socioeconomic background, the men with warmer, happier childhoods were better at relationships and had a more secure attachment to their partners. Short-term studies on women by the same researchers predict the same might be true for women.

Duke University sociology professor Jessi Streib wanted to understand how those class differences play out in our most intimate relationships, so she interviewed 32 couples in which one partner grew up “blue-collar” a child from a home headed by a high-school graduate and one grew up “white-collar” in a home headed by a college graduate , along with 10 couples in which both members grew up in the same class.
The most striking finding was that even after decades of marriage, most mixed-class couples were fundamentally different in ways that seemed tied to their upbringing. Vox asked Streib to explain how class looms over our romantic relationships, even when we don’t realize it. Danielle Kurtzleben: How did you decide you wanted to study cross-class couples? Jessi Streib: We are living in a time where the classes are coming apart. Geographically, we’re living farther and farther away from people of different classes.
Socially, we’re becoming more different from people of other classes, and economically, the earnings gap between the classes is increasing. With all this bad news about social class inequality in the United States right now, I wanted to know the good-news part: how did people come together across class lines in a time when the country is coming apart by class? DK: So what are the biggest similarities you found with cross-class couples?
The test drive lasted an hour and a half. Jonah got to see how the vehicle performed in off-road mud puddles. Thank you for signing up. Sorry, it looks like an error occurred. Little is known about how married couples from different class backgrounds deal with having very different beliefs about money. Money is a perpetual topic in married life. The process of combining two bank accounts, and sometimes two incomes, into one pooled set of resources is a fraught one, and it only becomes more so when childrearing and real-estate purchases are added to the mix.

Tensions are normative in the parent and adult child relationship, but there is little research on the topics that cause the most tension or whether tensions are associated with overall relationship quality. Tensions varied between and within families by generation, gender and age of offspring. In comparison to tensions regarding individual issues, tensions regarding the relationship were associated with lower affective solidarity and greater ambivalence.
Findings are consistent with the developmental schism hypothesis, which indicates that parent-child tensions are common and are the result of discrepancies in developmental needs which vary by generation, gender, and age. The parent-child relationship is one of the most long-lasting and emotionally intense social ties.
There is a lack of information, however, regarding the topics that generate more intense tensions for parents and their adult children, and whether mothers, fathers, and their sons and daughters report tensions of similar intensity. In addition, it is unclear whether tensions are associated with the overall quality of the relationship. The present study examined the topics that generate tensions for parents and their adult children to achieve two aims: 1 examine whether the intensity of tension topics varied by generation, gender, and age of adult children, and 2 assess associations between tension intensity, solidarity, and ambivalence.
Broadly defined, interpersonal tensions are irritations experienced in social ties. Tensions may therefore range from minor irritations to overt conflict. The developmental stake and developmental schism hypotheses provide a useful framework for understanding why tensions exist in the parent and adult child relationship across the lifespan.
Fingerman ; expanded on the developmental stake hypothesis with the concept of the developmental schism in which she proposed that tensions occur in the parent-child relationship due to discrepancies in the developmental needs of parents and their children. Two of the schisms that characterize the parent and adult child tie include independence also referred to as care of self and the importance placed on the relationship Fingerman, These schisms may lead to different topics of tension and variations in perceptions of tensions between family members.

Most children begin primary school at the start of the school year in which they reach school age 5 years old. All schools must provide for the admission of children from the September following their fourth birthday. Enter your child’s date of birth to find out when they should start school and when you’ll need to apply for a school place.
You have the right to start your child at school on a full time basis from the September following their fourth birthday, providing they have been allocated a school place. While schools are free to suggest a preferred induction process, parents retain the right to formally request that the school provide a full term schedule for their child from the beginning of the school year.
Your child may also start part time later in the school year, but not beyond the beginning of the term after they turn 5. If you plan to defer your child’s start date until later in the school year, you must still apply at the usual time for primary or infant school places. Children born between 1 April and 31 August are sometimes referred to as summer born children. They have the same right to defer entry as any other child.
This means they must start school at the beginning of the April term if they wish to keep their offer. Where parents wish for their summer born child to defer entry until the start of Year 1, they must refuse their offered place, which may be offered to a different child, and then reapply through the In Year process during the last month of reception year. For your child to start reception year in the following September, a full year after they were first entitled to start, you will need agreement from the admissions authority of the school.
This is because a new application for a later admissions round would be needed for your child to be considered for a place to be taught outside of their age group and with a younger group of children.
